Master Your Driving Skills with iDrive Alberta: Comprehensive In-Vehicle Lesson Plans for Calgary & Airdrie Drivers
At iDrive Alberta Driver Education, we offer a structured, professional Alberta driver’s licence training program designed to meet all provincial requirements. Our in-vehicle lessons cover essential psychomotor (handling), cognitive (knowledge), and perceptual (awareness) skills as outlined in official driver training documents.
Whether you’re a new driver in Calgary SW, SE, NW, NE, Airdrie, Okotoks, or Chestermere, our program ensures you build real-world skills progressively. Most students complete the course within one month, though the exact pace depends on individual learning ability and practice time.
What Does Our Driving Program Include?
Our 5-lesson in-vehicle training (10 hours total) follows a clear Alberta Transportation Suggested Lesson Plan with official activities such as:
Lesson 1 (2 Hours): This foundational lesson focuses on core vehicle handling and safety principles. Students will cover vehicle inspection, under-the-hood checks, basic vehicle handling skills, left and right turns, traffic lights, straight-line backing, perpendicular parking, lane changing, scanning techniques, SIPDE (Search, Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute), hazard awareness, predicting changing lights, and playground zones. This lesson establishes strong psychomotor and perceptual skills essential for safe driving.
Lesson 2 (2 Hours): Building on Lesson 1, this session includes a review of prior skills along with new challenges such as hill parking, parallel parking, uncontrolled intersections, highway merging, and highway lane changing. Emphasis is placed on developing cognitive skills, including effective decision-making in varied road conditions.
Lesson 3 (2 Hours): This lesson provides a thorough revision of all skills from the first two sessions to build muscle memory across key teaching modules, including residential turns, all parking manoeuvres, lane changing, highway driving, and visual scanning. It strengthens hazard management and driver confidence across different road types. Additional elements such as traffic circles, angle parking, and exploration of new driving environments and communities are introduced. When combined with consistent home practice and knowledge retention, this session significantly boosts student confidence and competence.
Lesson 4 (2 Hours): Advanced urban driving in dense traffic (tailored to your skill level), handling cyclists and foot traffic, one-way streets, dual turns, residential driving, full parking revision, independent driving, and your first formal driver assessment.
Lesson 5 (2 Hours): Independent driving with route planning, comprehensive revision of all skills, and the final driver assessment. By the end, you’ll have the competence needed for safe, independent driving.
Our lesson plans align directly with Alberta’s official driver training standards, ensuring you meet requirements for your Class 5 licence while developing lifelong safe driving habits.
More than just the basics, our program is flexible: Depending on the number of lessons completed, your quick learning ability, previous driving experience, home practice and the instructor’s professional assessment of your skill level, we can also incorporate downtown driving in dense traffic, rural routes, gravel road experience, rural 2- and 3-point turns, and threshold emergency braking.

Smart programs to fine-tune your skills
